  • Abstract:
The total transportation cost consists of the following three components: (1) Road construction cost, (2) Road user's cost and (3) Road maintenance cost. The road construction cost consists of initial cost of providing the road facility and includes the costs of earthwork} the road crust, the drainage structures, bridges, land acquisition, etc. It mainly depends upon the horizontal alignment and vertical profile. The road user's cost consists of direct cost to the user such as cost of fuels, lubricants, tires, spare parts, etc., and indirect costs such as depreciation of the vehicles, etc. These costs depend upon many factors such as road geometry (rise and fall, curvature, length, width), traffic (extent, composition, speed, congestion factor), road surface condition (roughness) and vehicles (age, weight, * maintenance standards, utilisation). The road maintenance cost consists of maintaining the road throughout its life by necessary maintenance (recurrent, like filling cracks, patches, filling ruts and periodic, like resurfacing, regravelling). The current practice of preparing road project is to propose an alignment which is low in the initial cost, by usual inspection of the longitudinal ground profile and # marking the grade lines to keep down earthwork to minimum. The effect of the resultant road geometry on the cost to the road user and of maintenance is hardly taken into consideration.
